Hiking to the valley floor requires navigating steep drops and wet environments. You must hire a local village guide before starting the descent. Proper footwear and physical preparation are essential for a safe climb.
What is the Sekumpul waterfall hike difficulty?
The trail is officially rated moderate to challenging.
The descent involves hundreds of steep concrete steps. These stairs become very slippery from constant mist and rainfall. The climb back up requires good cardiovascular stamina. The hike takes 30 to 60 minutes in each direction.
Does the trek include a river crossing?
Yes, you must wade through a shallow, rocky river to reach the falls.
The valley basin is divided by a water channel. You will walk through ankle- to knee-deep water. Wear water shoes or trekking sandals with straps. Walking barefoot over the slippery river rocks is not recommended.

What trekking routes are available?
You can choose between a Medium Trek or a Long Trek.
Both routes require a mandatory local guide. The Medium Trek takes you to the main 80-meter twin falls. The Long Trek adds a hike to the triple cascades of Fiji Waterfall. You must decide at the official ticket counter before starting.
| Route | Destinations | Cost (IDR) |
|---|---|---|
| Medium Trek | Main Sekumpul base | 125,000 - 150,000 |
| Long Trek | Sekumpul and Fiji Waterfalls | 200,000 - 250,000 |
Is the hike down to Sekumpul Waterfall safe?
The trail is safe if you walk carefully and wear proper shoes.
The main hazard is slipping on the wet concrete steps. Mist from the 80-meter falls keeps the lower trail permanently damp. Use the handrails where available. Step slowly and avoid rushing the climb back up.

When is the best time to hike Sekumpul?
The dry season from April to October offers the safest trail conditions.
During these months, the stairs are less flooded. March and April are ideal because the water flow remains powerful without the daily heavy monsoon rains. The main falls will also run clearer during drier weather.
How should I prepare physically?
You need a moderate level of cardiovascular fitness for the return journey.
Going down is hard on your knees, but going up tests your lungs. The ascent forces you to climb hundreds of steep steps without flat breaks. Bring 1 to 2 liters of drinking water for the journey up. Stop at the mid-trail lookouts to rest.

Questions travellers ask
Can I just visit the viewpoints without hiking down?

The hike takes 30 to 60 minutes each way. Your total time depends on your fitness level and how long you stop for photos at the base.
Do I need hiking boots?
No, but comfortable hiking shoes or trekking sandals with strong grip are required. Do not wear flip-flops due to the slippery steps and river crossing.
